Langdon Days SK8
July 22, 2008

Langdon's 125th celebration would not have been complete without a little skate boarding. On Sunday July 17th, 12 boarders came out in full force ready to show off their talent. Tricks included ollies, board slides, manuals, kick flip, sex change, and action all over the dip-pity-do. Teens competed in one of two categories, 13 or under and 14 or over. In the younger category First place prize, a visionary skate deck and $25.00 gift certificate to Rippers, went to Colby. Second place, a LYC Sk8 deck, went to Beau. Coming in third and winning a Circa Backpack was Brett. In the older division first place, a Visionary deck and $50.00 gift card to Rippers, was won by Dylan. Second place prize, being a Visionary deck, went to James. Finally third, a LYC Sk8 deck was won by Patrick. The competition was close and in the end everyone that entered the competition went home with a prize. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors we were able to make sure that no one went home empty handed. Thanks again to Visionary, Rippers, Circa, and the LYC for sponsoring this great event. A big thanks also to everyone that came out a supported all of our competitors. It was great to see so many people out for one last ride on the Langdon lumps. The LYC is already looking forward to next years competition on our brand new Skate park!

Skateboard Park Update
Feb 4, 2008
by Sarah Coulson

For those of you that don't know, the youth in Langdon have been working hard for the past year and a half in order to obtain a new outdoor skateboard park. This dream is slowly but surely becoming a reality with hopes of building in the spring. There have been a number of great fund raisers including: selling pizza, posters, stickers, and t-shirts. A silent auction, skate board competition, bottle drive, dances, movie nights and a coin count. The youth have put a lot of effort into these events. They have also done a presentation to the Alberta government and the MD of Rockeyview in order to receive grant money. So far we have $93,000 in our skate park account and have also received another grant for $55,000.

We picked a company called Spectrum to design and build the park. We have submitted all the features the youth want in the park and are expecting a plan as early as next week!!

With all of these positive things happening, we still need a few things to complete the dream of a new skateboard park. We need volunteers to help with digging up the old tennis courts, getting the surrounding area ready for building, and to donate building materials such as rebar, concrete, gravel, dirt and landscaping items for the area surrounding the new skateboard park.

If you are interesting in helping the Langdon Youth Council in anyway, have any ideas or want any information about the project feel free to contact Sarah Coulson at info@langdonyouthcouncil.com or 681-4999.

Skateboard Competition
Skateboard Competition in Strathmore
April 28, 2007
by Sarah Coulson

On April 28th Terri Finnegen, Zorian Klomochko and Myself took 11 boys to Strathmore for a Skateboard competition. The event was held to raise money for a new outdoor skateboard park in Strathmore and promote the sport of skateboarding. It was hosted by the Strathmore skateboard team called Epic. They did a really good job and everything went smoothly. Zorian and myself judged and did music while Terri turned into team photographer.

We had 4 of our Langdon Skateboard team members compete in the competition. They were Lanny S, Tyler H, Evan L and Colby G. They all skated well and tried hard with a lot of people watching. Out of around 20 people in the younger age category, Colby placed 3rd, won some prizes and even won some money for being one of the only ones wearing a helmet!! Good job!!

I would like to thank Team Epic for inviting us to the event, treating us with a BBQ and hosting an awesome skateboarding competition. Congratulations to all the winners.

Come out during Langdon Days for the 1st Langdon skateboard competition being put on by the Langdon Skateboard Team. Contact Sarah for more information 681-4999.

The Langdon Youth Council Skate Team was assembled with the goal of helping the Youth Council prepare an addition for the Langdon skateboard park next year. Langdon has a lot of youth that participate in and enjoy skateboarding. The Langdon youth council did five skateboarding trips this summer, which were all not only full but had waiting lists. The skateboard park is already enjoyed by so many youth and since it is a safe, healthy activity for them to be involved in, the Langdon Youth Council decided to take on the task of building an addition and to get the youth involved in the project. <more>
